The 68-acre crescent-shaped parcel of land located adjacent to Merriweather Post Pavilion and Symphony Woods, known as the Merriweather District, is envisioned as an urban live/work community, uniquely situated in an environment of natural beauty and the focus of the next stage of the revitalization of Downtown Columbia. Developed by The Howard Hughes Corporation, it is set to become a prime example of James Rouse’s vision of “A City in a Garden.”
Development in the new district will include 2,300 residences, a 250-room hotel, 1.5 million square feet of office space, 314,000 square feet of retail and 225,000 square feet of civic and cultural uses. Environmental enhancements, such as stream restoration, are already under way.
The first office building in the Merriweather District has opened. One Merriweather contains approximately 200,000 square feet of space and is anchored by MedStar, which will occupy almost 100,000 square feet of space. In addition, there is an exercise facility on the ground floor and a street-side restaurant. Adjacent to the new One Merriweather building is the site of Two Merriweather, a five floor, 135,000 square foot building currently under construction. Two Merriweather will open in Fall 2017.
The Merriweather District is distinguished by its proximity to Merriweather Post Pavilion, the nationally recognized concert venue, which currently is undergoing major renovations. It is expected that the Merriweather District will become a major employment center and an economic engine to continue to support the quality of life that has been the hallmark of Columbia.
